Why Study Psychology?

Why would I want to study psychology? Isn't it just a bunch of old guys who think they know everything?

The answer to the second question is easy. No. The first not as easy.

Psychology is the study of psyche. That means everything we do, say, or think is part of that study. There are so many different types of psychology I can't even list them all. Psychology is looking into the behavior of others to understand the behavior in ourselves, which is why I am taking the course.

Psychology and her brother philosophy are two of the oldest sciences. The ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Chinese, and Indians all left behind the beginning works of psychology over a 1000 years before those old guys I mentioned, Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, were even born. Psychology is nothing new but the science of psychology is only 131 years old. The study of psychology started when Wilhelm Wundt founded the first official laboratory dedicated to the research of psychology in 1879. His goal is the same as mine. To understand or explain behavior in a scientific manner. Since then, there have been many breakthroughs in psychology, such as knowing what part of the brain controls memory, emotions, behaviors, mental disorders, and much more, which we will explore later. Psychology may be considered a "fake" science by some, but while it is harder to discover, the rewards are plentiful and many of the breakthroughs have helped hospitals, doctors, and even teachers in their pursuits.

That's all for now.

"Only fools know everything."
